The periodic review of academic and/or teaching units provides an opportunity for each unit to reflect on and evaluate its programs, plans, organizations, activities, and goals. This assessment process includes the unit's own self-study report and a subsequent review by a team of external specialists. The comprehensive review aims to foster academic excellence and to enhance the unit's quality and progress. At American University, each academic and/or teaching unit engages in the review process, customarily, every seven years. In some cases, an accreditation review also can serve as the periodic assessment of an academic and/or teaching unit.
