Crisis support is available 24/7 through AU ProtoCall. Students can call AU ProtoCall from anywhere at anytime. Parents, faculty, and staff may also call AU ProtoCall services if concerned about a student. The number for AU ProtoCall is 202-885-7979. 

You can access the online scheduling portal at the top of the DOS website. Click “make appointment” to schedule an appointment with a DOS Staff member.

Medical – Faculty have the discretion to excuse any and all absences. If a student missed class due to a medical issue (illness, injury, hospitalization, doctor appointment), and the faculty member wants proof of this, please email dos@american.edu and attach medical documentation and dates you missed (or will miss) class(es). Do not submit medical documentation to faculty. 

Bereavement death of a family member. Faculty members have the discretion to excuse any and all absences. If the faculty wants proof, please email the DOS Office.

Please review the Class Attendance Policy (section 4.1) of the Academic Regulations. 

Students requesting incompletes should work directly with their faculty and academic advisor. Faculty have the discretion to grant Incompletes according to academic regulations.

First-Year resident students are not allowed a vehicle on campus or in the neighborhood surrounding any University property. The Office of the Dean of Students requires a critical reason to grant an exception to a First-Year resident student who lives on campus or University property. First-Year resident students requesting parking exceptions should email DOS with reason for the request and include AU ID#.  If the request is medically related, please provide medical documentation as an attachment to your email.

  • Transcript requests (if student will be transferring to another university)
  • Course registration (if student is currently on medical leave)
  • Forgot to submit Readiness to Return documentation

If you have a DOS “stop” on your account for one of the reasons mentioned above, please email dos@american.edu include name, AU ID and reason for removing stop.
