Service to the AU Community Award

Derik Williams

Washington College of Law

Washington College of Law (WCL) is starting a community garden to promote community through service. The garden creates a judgment-free space that everyone in the diverse WCL community can interact and grow something beautiful together. The garden also memorializes community members who passed away within the last few years.

Derik Williams’ dedication is the driving force that keeps the project moving forward and on schedule. He has secured funding, maintains the budget, and processes the transactions in addition to less administrative duties such as delivering 50+ bags of soil and compost and driving over an hour outside of DC to pick up the wood for the raised beds. He makes himself available at nights and on weekends to help with the project and never complains about the extra work. Every day, he works with students and faculty to make sure this project meets its deadline.

Derik is a team player and his positive attitude is infectious. The WCL garden will become a reality because of his commitment and perseverance.

Congratulations to Derik Williams for being selected as the recipient of the 2020 Service to the AU Community Staff Award and thank you for all that you do for American University.
