With all the news about the expanding footprint of the illness, job impacts, and a more volatile stock market than we’ve seen in a long time, deciding what to do with your finances can be tough. You’ve probably heard a lot of information about your investments. But what about everything else in your financial life? This webinar will focus on positive steps you can take today including: Evaluating and managing immediate cash needs; Working with creditors; Managing investments; Avoiding scams; and seeking out opportunities like refinancing, paying down debt, or Roth conversions. You'll leave this session with actionable items that put you in control of your finances and set you up for long-term financial success.

Emergency financial help resources

  • COVID Retirement withdrawal options – You may be eligible to make a withdrawal from your retirement account under the CARES Act if you experience adverse financial consequences as a result of being quarantined, furloughed or laid off, or your work hours have been reduced. Note: this option is only available through the end of December 2020 as per the CARES Act – see “Withdrawals” on the Retirement page
  • FSAP emergency loan – American University provides emergency loans up to $1,000 with repayment through scheduled paycheck deductions to its full-time employees. The emergency loan is intended to assist university full-time employees who have urgent financial needs. Some conditions apply. See the Staff Personnel Policy Manual section 11.2 for more details.
