Financial Aid, Student Fees and Refunds

Is tuition discounted?

We are providing all undergraduate and graduate students an AU Community Care Fall Discount equivalent to 10 percent of fall tuition. We also already committed additional $13 million in financial aid for this academic year.

What fees will be charged or waived?

We are waiving the Sports Center Fee for the fall. This is in addition to the already announced reductions in Activity Fees.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on the DC community and area universities, WMATA is temporarily suspending the U∙PASS Program for the fall 2020 semester. The U∙PASS Program has become part of the AU student experience and we understand this decision affects the transportation options for students residing in the Washington, DC area. We consulted extensively with WMATA in pursuit of a modified program for the fall, but ultimately WMATA decided it was not a viable option.

Previously issued U∙PASS Program cards are no longer valid and new cards will not be issued this fall. Student accounts will be updated accordingly regarding the U∙PASS Program fee.

The university will continue to work with WMATA regarding the status of the U∙PASS Program for the spring 2021 semester. Decisions will be based on the evolving conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic and the operating status of WMATA and the university.

Will financial aid be affected?

Financial aid packages will be updated as applicable to reflect the 10 percent tuition discount.

Will my undergraduate financial aid change because the university has canceled its residential component for the fall 2020 semester?

Your aid will not change because AU is not offering a residential option. We anticipate that students will continue to incur costs for food and housing this fall. However, students who notify the Financial Aid Office that they will be a commuter student—a student living at home with a parent, parents, or family members—will have their costs of attendance adjusted to the lower commuter budget and their financial aid awards reduced accordingly.

Will the 10 percent tuition discount or changes in fees impact my financial aid package?

For many students, the 10 percent tuition discount and fee changes will not impact financial aid eligibility. However, no combination of tuition restricted awards may exceed tuition. At AU, all institutional grant and scholarships are tuition restricted. Also, most external scholarships are tuition restricted. AU is required to reduce the amount of tuition restricted awards to not exceed the total tuition charges.

Will my financial aid be impacted if I don’t return this fall for family or personal reasons but plan to return in the spring?

Students should work with their academic advisor and the registrar’s office to request a leave of absence. Students on an approved leave of absence will maintain their spring aid eligibility. Please contact your financial aid counselor for detailed information regarding the potential impact that a leave of absence may have on repayment of federal loans.

What’s the best way to find out about the status of my financial aid?

Please refer to the myAU student portal at myau.american.edu for information regarding your financial aid status.

How can I find information about graduate financial aid?

For questions regarding your graduate merit award or fellowship, please contact your school administrator. For graduate federal financial aid inquiries, please contact the Financial Aid Office at financialaid@american.edu.

When will housing and dining refunds be processed?

Student accounts will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the elimination of housing and dining charges.

What is the status of my Federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) application?
