The Washington Semester Program Fall and Spring semester options are open to college students who have:

  • a college GPA 2.5/4.0 or higher
  • a minimum of 3 semesters of university coursework completed

You can apply to join the program as early as your spring semester of your sophomore year in college.

If you do attend a partner institution

  1. Contact your home school's Washington Semester Program partner representative to learn about your home school's policies on credit transfer, financial aid, and any home school requirements/deadlines to study off campus.
  2. Your home school Washington Semester Program representative will explain the internal application requirements to apply to the program. Complete your home school's requirements.
  3. Proceed to How to Apply.

If you do not attend a partner institution

  1. Check with your home school advisor or study off-campus office on Washington Semester Program credit transfer, financial aid, and any home school requirements to study off-campus.

  3. If you're unsure whether you attend a partner institution, email washsem@american.edu or call 202-895-4900 to find out.
  1. Once you have completed your home school requirements, create an account.
  2. After you have created an account, complete the application.
  3. After you have submitted the first portion of your application, you must return to your account and complete supplemental items (once you refresh the page, supplemental items should be an option).

    Note: Your application will not be considered until you have submitted the required supplemental items.

If you attend a partner institution:

  • Unofficial transcript from your home institution
  • Approval from your home institution's representative.
    If you are unable to identify your home institution's representative, please contact us at washsem@american.edu.

If you do NOT attend a partner institution:

  • Unofficial transcript from your home institution
  • Academic letter of recommendation

Summer Requirements

Summer 2018

Many DC organizations have their summer internship openings posted as early as November. Therefore, we recommend that you apply to our November 15 or February 15 deadlines so you can be considered for internships that require security clearances or internships that are available for applications starting in November through March.
