Current American University undergraduate students may apply for admission to a combined B.A./M.A. program in SOC during the second semester of their junior year, but no later than the first semester of their senior year. Students in any undergraduate major at AU are eligible for consideration; an undergraduate degree in communication is not required.
Admission requirements:
- cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.50
- a completed application form
- two written faculty recommendations
- a 1,000-word statement of purpose highlighting the student's interests and abilities in the field of communication
- resume
As part of the application process, students are highly encouraged to arrange an interview with the Division Director of their M.A. program of interest. Please note that with the exception of the BA/MA program in Political Communication, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is NOT required for admission to a combined master’s degree program. Students applying to the combined BA/MA in Political Communication must submit GRE scores prior to the start of the graduate program. Applicants to any BA/MA program who wish to be considered for a merit award, however, must submit GRE scores. An application fee is not required.
Students are admitted formally to the M.A. program only after all undergraduate requirements have been met. If admitted, candidates may use up to six approved credit hours at the 500 level or above to satisfy both undergraduate and graduate degree program requirements. The B.A./M.A. program requires continuous enrollment; students admitted to the program may not defer enrollment.
