FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS
DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP AWARDS
We are currently accepting nominations for the fall 2013 semester dissertation fellowship awards funded by the Office of the Provost, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research. Eight (8) one-semester fellowships will be available. Each fellowship will include funding for 1 credit of tuition, plus a ten thousand dollar ($10,000) stipend.
Eligible doctoral students are those who are admitted to doctoral candidacy, have defended their dissertation proposals, have collected their dissertation data and will be writing up their dissertations during fall 2013. The Graduate Program Director must certify in writing that the doctoral candidate will submit the completed dissertation project to the doctoral committee by the end of December 2013.
Applicants who are receiving GFA funds from another source for the award period are not eligible to apply.
This opportunity is available for doctoral students in the following schools/college: CAS, SIS, SOC and SPA.
Please submit your nomination(s), with a copy of an abstract of the dissertation proposal and the below certification form electronically to Anita Brown abrown@american.edu no later than April 3, 2013.

DOCTORAL STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS
The Office of the Provost provides competitive intramural research grants to doctoral students to support their dissertation research. The awards are managed by the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research. Awards are available to doctoral graduate students who
- have been admitted to candidacy for the doctorate before the grant period begins (in some departments admission to candidacy may be spoken of as “ABD - “All But Dissertation.” If you have questions about this requirement, check with your department.)
- have an approved dissertation proposal, and
- have an active dissertation chair and committee.
The activity may occur anywhere in the world. The grants are intended to provide supplemental funds to support basic research, field work, lab work, or closely related endeavors. The awards may be for up to $5,000.
The funding period for the award is from May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014. Award recipients will be reimbursed for expenses with submission of appropriate receipts to the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research. Details of this process will be provided in the award letter. If desired, the funds from the award can support a portion of a larger project. If this is the case, the proposal should carefully delineate the portion of the larger project that can be completed during the funding period.

FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
Hart A. Massey Fellowship and United Methodist Graduate Scholarships
The Hart A. Massey Fellowship is awarded each academic year to one or more incoming Canadian students pursuing graduate studies full-time at American University. The fellowship is applied to tuition charges. It is renewable for one year to students who show satisfactory progress towards their graduate degree. This is a competitive award, and applicants must meet minimum University graduate admission requirements to be considered. The application deadline is February 22, 2013.

United Methodist Graduate Scholarship
The United Methodist Graduate Scholarship is awarded each academic year to new full-time graduate students who have held membership in the United Methodist Church for at least two years, have strong academic skills, and are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The scholarship is applied to tuition charges. Awards are renewable for one year to students who show satisfactory progress towards their graduate degree. This is a competitive award, and applicants must meet minimum University graduate admission requirements to be considered. The application deadline is March 4, 2013.

Scholars of the Center for Environmental Filmmaking
Scholars of the Center for Environmental Filmmaking are selected annually to further the Center’s mission to produce the next generation of environmental and wildlife filmmakers.
Three Scholars are selected each year as they embark on their thesis projects. Scholars are chosen during the second year of their graduate program when they have accumulated at least 18 credit hours. Part time students are eligible.
Each grantee receives a total reimbursement of up to $1,500 of actual expenses for his or her thesis film. Expenses eligible for reimbursement must meet American University policies.
The following application requirements and eligibility conditions apply: 1. Scholars must be students in good standing, have a record of excellence in film, video or new media production, and a minimum GPA of 3.5.
