Fall 2017 Move-In at American University

Fall move-in is one of the busiest and most memorable events of the year!

Whether you're a new student moving in for the first time or a returning student coming back to American University, we welcome you to campus! It's going to be a great semester.

You will receive updates throughout the summer from Housing & Residence Life to your AU email account. These updates will include information on your room assignment, move-in, and information for you to make the most of your move-in.

Move-In Schedule

You should plan to check in to your residence according to the table below. New student arrivals outside of these times will be authorized, but checking in according to your time is highly recommended to manage traffic flow. Check-ins after 3 p.m. are not guaranteed to have move-in volunteer assistance.

First year students: Saturday, 8/19 and Sunday, 8/20. Halls open at 9 a.m.
Returning students: Wednesday, 8/23. Halls open at 9 a.m.

New students, make sure you have uploaded your One Card photo or have taken a photo at Eagle Summit before July 31.

  1. Proceed to the front desk, or designated check-in location, of your residence hall. If arriving by car, make sure to follow the traffic plan to minimize confusion.
  2. After presenting your government-issued photo identification, complete your registration card.
  3. Initial your registration card to acknowledge that you have received your One Card and mailbox key.
  4. Move in your belongings and say hello to your Resident Assistant!

Dining service begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday, 8/19 in Terrace Dining Room.

Planning Ahead

Arriving to Campus

Look over the traffic plan (PDF) if you are driving to campus. Since many students will be moving in at the same time as you are, you'll want to know where to park and unload, and avoid getting into the wrong line.

Shipping Ahead of Time

Mail and packages are accepted starting Monday, August 14. If you order or ship items ahead of time, they may be returned to sender. Make sure to address your packages correctly. Tip: Jot down your mailing address with the complete 20016-xxxx zip code to make sure your packages go to the right place.

Personalizing Your Room

We know you're excited about personalizing your space on campus, but keep in mind that your room here and living space back home may be very different sizes. Check out our suggested packing list and make sure you're not bringing any restricted items (bottom of page). Certain items, such as microwaves, may only be brought in through approved vendors.
