Undertaking graduate study in teacher education allows for students to examine the significant role of teachers in the shaping of individuals, communities, and society as a whole. The teacher education faculty are committed to advancing the potential of education for each individual and dedicated to advancing a theorized practice that prepares professionals to care for the whole child. The faculty members engage in creative and innovative teaching, rigorous research, and professional service with a goal to engage our students in the important work of teaching the next generation. Democracy itself is grounded in an educated citizenry, and teachers have the huge responsibility to ensure that all children have the opportunity to receive a quality education. Graduates of our MAT programs are equipped to accommodate learner needs, to nurture the strengths and talents of those they serve, and to provide leadership in classrooms, schools and in the policy arena.
The Master’s in teaching program is designed for students with no previous background or preparation in education, as well as those in the classroom who wish to acquire teaching licensure in early childhood, elementary education, secondary education (English, social studies, math, biology chemistry, and physics), or English for speakers of other languages.
The NCATE-accredited Master’s in teaching programs are anchored in a knowledge-based, research-and values-informed conceptual framework and grounded in four inter-related principles — equity, community, diversity, and excellence — that shape the curricular, instructional, research, and professional service activities of the teacher education faculty. Master’s students practice these principles through course work and field-based teaching opportunities
Teacher education courses help students translate theory of pedagogical knowledge and instructional methods into everyday practice. Practical experience is an integral part of the program. Currently, more than 50 schools in the greater DC area offer placements for our students. The range and diversity of partner schools offer students the opportunity to teach in a variety of settings, including urban, suburban, charter, bilingual, public, and private schools.
For more than a decade the School of Education has also focused significant energy on the development of partnerships to support teachers in high-need DC public and public charter schools. Through a number of federal grants over 1,000 DC teachers have participated in subsidized graduate degree programs or graduate-level professional-development programs. SOE and AU are committed to working together with the DC community to ensure an equitable and excellence education for all the city’s children.
MAT graduates teach in schools nationwide. With the solid foundation they gain through the MAT program, graduates enter the workplace prepared to launch their careers, supported by an active alumni network.
