The American University Student Government (AUSG) represents the undergraduate community by providing advocacy, programming, and services and promoting the social and academic interests of the student population. Traditionally, the SG is known for Artemas Ward Week, Founders' Week, and Spring Fling.
AUSG consists of three co-equal branches called the executive, legislative, and judicial. The Executive Branch is further divided into four co-equal cabinets, lead by the four Executives.
Advocacy comes through the President's Cabinet, which consists of departments like the Student Advocacy Center and Women's Initiative. This cabinet works with AU administration to promote the interests of the students on issues ranging from clean energy to housing to transportation.
Providing concerts and speakers among other events, the Vice President's Cabinet deals with programming. This cabinet includes five departments, including the Kennedy Political Union (KPU) and the Student Union Board (SUB).
The other two Executives, the Secretary and Comptroller, provide services to the student body and AU community. The Comptroller handles many financial matters in addition to overseeing the AUTO and Bike Lending programs, which provide vans to campus organizations and bikes to students, respectively.
The Legislative Branch, comprising the 30-member Undergraduate Senate, advocates on behalf of the student body, provides oversight to the other two branches, and allocates the SG budget.
Finally, the Judicial Branch, consisting of the Board of Elections and Judicial Board serve as the main adjudication arena for the Student Government. These entities ensure that the organization, as a whole, follows the policies passed by the Senate, as well as its Constitution, Bylaws and other governing documents in areas ranging from elections to the day to day operations of the Senate and Executives.
